Parallels: How To Install Ubuntu 7.10

This is a guide to install Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) on Parallels 3.0 and Leopard.

Configuration

  • MacBook 13''
  • Intel Core Duo 2Ghz
  • 1Gb RAM
  • 80Gb HD
  • MacOS X 10.5 (Leopard)
  • Parallels 3.0 (build 5160)

Preparation

If you have installed Leopard you should upgrade your Parallels version at the build 5160 (Leopard Support).

Installation

  1. Download the disk image (ubuntu-7.10-alternate-i386.iso) from the Ubuntu website.
  2. Start Parallels and choose Typical, then Linux from OS Type and Ubuntu Linux from OS Version.
  3. Specify a name for the virtual machine: Ubuntu Linux 7.10.
  4. Optimize for better performance of: Virtual machine.
  5. Click on More Options, then select ISO image and choose the disk image.
  6. Now should start the installation process: choose Install in text mode from the first screen.
  7. Choose your language and locale. When prompt for the keyboard layout detection, choose no. Now should appear a page to pick the keyboard layout. On the following screen do not select the Macintosh layout.
  8. Network configuration: enter the name of the computer.
  9. Partition disks: choose Guided - use entire disk and set up LVM. On the following screen choose Yes, then Finish partitioning and write changes to disk. Don't worry about disk dimension, the LVM don't really use that space.
  10. Choose your timezone.
  11. Setup an user.
  12. Have a coffee.
  13. Optional: If the installation process prompts for the download of your language pack, install it now.
  14. Screen resolution: 1280x800.
  15. Take a break.
  16. Installation complete: choose Continue. This should reboot your virtual machine.
  17. Login, click on the Network Connection icon, then choose your connection. This should activate your LAN connection.
  18. Click on the Updates icon, then upgrade your system.

Done

Now your Linux box should be ready. Feel free to comment if something goes wrong.

    actually, on my macbook pro it installed correctly but it seems like the resolution listed here is not supported

    Thanks for the great install directions i tried 6 other directions on the web before i found yours. One of which was just screen shots of the normal install that does not work ya i know! Thanks for taking the time to figure it out and make a well written guide that works! Ps. substituting beer for coffee works great if you are not at work! the install takes about 3 times longer your way but it works and i had beer!

    ok i lied it does not work. every thing seems to work the install goes fine. the startup looks like it works but then it says the display server has shut down about 6 times in the last 90 seconds. It is likely that something bad is going on. Wait for 2 minutes before trying again on display :0.
